Gold & Diamond Source is owned by Julie Weintraub who has an amazing charity, Hands Across the Bay.  They work directly with domestic violence survivors.  I hate to use the word victim because they aren’t victims, they are survivors.

Did you know that those that abuse animals will more than likely “grow up” to abuse humans?

Researchers have found that between 71% and 83% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partners also abused or killed the family pet. And another study found that in families under supervision for physical abuse of their children, pet abuse was concurrent in 88% of the families

Melissa is a domestic violence survivor.  She went through a horrific attack by her ex-boyfriend that left her scarred but not broken.  She is a survivor.

Khalessi survived horrific abuse at the hands of humans.  She is scarred but not broken.

I wanted to bring these two together to show that even as much abuse these two went through, both of them have the amazing ability to survive.  These two had an instant connection beyond the scars that are visible, might have been the treats lol

This was the first time I had met Melissa.  She’s the sweetest ever, wants people to know her story and wants people to know she’s a survivor.  That is a hero.  That is someone that has overcome so much and wants to move forward.

I’ve known Khalessi since the day Stephanie & Mike pulled her from Orange Co. Animal Services.  She has an amazing ability to love and trust humans even after everything she’s been through.

Both of them have a story to tell.  Both of them are survivors.  Both of them have a past but only want to focus on the future.

But for now, I wanted to share their story through my lens.  The bond these two have, regardless of how either one of them got to this point.

The day before our shoot, Melissa emailed me to let me know that ABC Action News wanted to be there.  Of course I was fine with that and the story that Ashley Glass put together couldn’t of been more perfect!  You can either read the article here or watch the video below from the ABC Action News Channel YouTube.

Together…these two are rebuilding their smiles 🙂

Khalessi decided to get a little diva-ish during the shoot!  That just brings out her amazing personality though

While Melissa was getting interviewed, Khalessi was hamming it up!

Khalessi was getting tired and figured this was the perfect spot to cuddle up and snuggle.

“I’m sooooo awkward in front of the camera”
“I hate having my picture taken”
“I have no clue what to do with my hands” (as they wave their hands in the air…like they just don’t care)

Those are just a few of the things I hear from clients when it comes to being in front of my camera.  Maybe this is why I’m not in front of the camera much…wait, this isn’t about me.

On Saturday, I had Emily (you’ll see more of her in a minute) break out the trusty point and shoot for some behind the scenes shots of me working.  It was actually funny to me because I know what I’m showing clients and doing poses for them but now I saw what I looked like.  I’m such a dork so I apologize to all past, present and future clients lol

This shows you that I’m there to hold your hand, cuddle with your new husband (and you) and show you what to do with your hands.  (please take the cuddling part as a joke, I really don’t want to cuddle with you lol)  Since I’ll ramble, on with the pictures please!!

But first…Emily, my assistant?  Yeah…here she is in all her glory.  I love this girl!!

Telling your couples how to pose is one thing but I’m a super visual person so I’m just going to assume that everyone is.  When I show you, it makes it so much easier for you to understand how I want you standing.  Sometimes the way I have you stand may be super awkward but the outcome is pretty amazing.

Case in point….

I’m getting ready to get my snuggle on with Jennifer and Rob watches.  I wanted him in real close, kissing her shoulder.

And what we got was this!

This one cracks me up simply for the fact that Jennifer and Rob are looking at me like I have no clue what I’m doing.  After all, I just click a button ya’ know 😉

If there’s one thing that I love, well besides my couples, shooting weddings, blah blah blah….it’s my ring shots.  I will usually do anything I can to get them, even if it means sitting on the job.  Sharma, my amazing second shooter making sure I’m not cussing to loud when the rings wouldn’t stand up.

But really?!?!  *swoon*

So the moral of this blog post is, I will help you in posing.  That’s what I’m there for, even if you give me crap about not being comfortable in front of the camera.

Oh and the other moral of the blog post is, if you have a candy bar and I shoot your rings on the candy, I will in turn eat some 😉
