Gold & Diamond Source is owned by Julie Weintraub who has an amazing charity, Hands Across the Bay.  They work directly with domestic violence survivors.  I hate to use the word victim because they aren’t victims, they are survivors.

Did you know that those that abuse animals will more than likely “grow up” to abuse humans?

Researchers have found that between 71% and 83% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partners also abused or killed the family pet. And another study found that in families under supervision for physical abuse of their children, pet abuse was concurrent in 88% of the families

Melissa is a domestic violence survivor.  She went through a horrific attack by her ex-boyfriend that left her scarred but not broken.  She is a survivor.

Khalessi survived horrific abuse at the hands of humans.  She is scarred but not broken.

I wanted to bring these two together to show that even as much abuse these two went through, both of them have the amazing ability to survive.  These two had an instant connection beyond the scars that are visible, might have been the treats lol

This was the first time I had met Melissa.  She’s the sweetest ever, wants people to know her story and wants people to know she’s a survivor.  That is a hero.  That is someone that has overcome so much and wants to move forward.

I’ve known Khalessi since the day Stephanie & Mike pulled her from Orange Co. Animal Services.  She has an amazing ability to love and trust humans even after everything she’s been through.

Both of them have a story to tell.  Both of them are survivors.  Both of them have a past but only want to focus on the future.

But for now, I wanted to share their story through my lens.  The bond these two have, regardless of how either one of them got to this point.

The day before our shoot, Melissa emailed me to let me know that ABC Action News wanted to be there.  Of course I was fine with that and the story that Ashley Glass put together couldn’t of been more perfect!  You can either read the article here or watch the video below from the ABC Action News Channel YouTube.

Together…these two are rebuilding their smiles 🙂

Khalessi decided to get a little diva-ish during the shoot!  That just brings out her amazing personality though

Khalessi was getting tired and figured this was the perfect spot to cuddle up and snuggle.
